What is Artillery?
Here the scope of the museum is introduced and the visitor is first confronted with large projectiles and a dramatic piece of tank armour pierced by anti-tank shot.
A ‘traditional’ cast-iron gun is emplaced, where a gunport was originally provided to defend the area near the gate to the Fort. This smooth-bore gun is contrasted with later guns and sectioned pieces to suggest lines of development of artillery and give visitors a key to some of the technical terms that crop up again and again when visiting the rest of the museum.
A popular AV presentation gives a lively overview of artillery in a historical and technical context.
