Age of Discovery
Mathematics, mobility & the East
Ocean going ships armed with powerful guns enabled European maritime states to undertake epic voyages of discovery, followed closely by trade agreements, bringing massive wealth to Europe.
Later, imperial conquests took place supported by powerful weaponry of which artillery was a vital component. During the 17th century, science and mathematics developed rapidly, leading to improvements in technology.
To reduce the weight of guns on board ship, lighter versions of the heavy guns of the 16th century were designed; visitors can see a remarkable example recovered from a wreck off the Dutch coast.
On land, armies gradually increased their proportion of artillery and attempted to make it more mobile. A more professional approach was fostered amongst gunners, who were separate to the rest of the army.
