RA Historical Society
Aims
- To encourage an interest in the various aspects of arms and armour.
- To support the Royal Armouries in its endeavours to generate greater public awareness of the museum’s role in society.
- To act as volunteers on occasions to assist with various museum functions and activities according to individual interests and areas of knowledge.
Interests and knowledge
The interests and knowledge of the society’s current membership vary immensely, and include:
- Medieval arms, armour and textiles
- Archery
- 17th and 18th century English edged weapons
- French Napoleonic arms and armour
- Japanese arms, armour and textiles
- 17th to 19th century Indian arms and amour
- The Roman army
- Middle Eastern knives
- Early firearms
- Military uniforms and militaria in general.
Activities
Activities vary from month to month and can include:
- Presentations by visiting speakers
- Presentation by Royal Armouries curators, conservators or interpreters
- Meetings in the RA library to enable a wide range of knowledge and opinions to be aired, and treasured personal possessions to be viewed. This also allows use of the library facilities out of hours
- Joint meetings with other RA societies and those from the community.
- Access to the collections and to the superb specialist library.
Membership
- Membership is free.
- Membership to the society gives members the opportunity to develop their own knowledge and meet regularly with like-minded men and women.
Meetings are held on the third Thursday of every month at the Royal Armouries in Leeds. Members gather from 19.00 at the Reception desk of the museum.
