Children's Fun Days

Every Tuesday & Thursday during the school holidays Fort Nelson have fun event days designed just for children.

Entry to the Fort and children’s events is FREE, although a small charge applies for craft activities.

Do something different and bring the kids for a great day out!

JULY

Thurs 24 July

Children’s event – Birds of Prey

Costumed Victorian falconers bring their magnificent birds to the skies above the Fort. Plus Punch & Judy shows and Fowl Histories – a fun-filled look at birds in battle!

Tues 29 July

Children’s event – Raiders of the Lost Fort

Indiana Jones-style action with adventurous obstacle courses, exciting storytelling and even a chance to meet and handle snakes, scorpions and other exotic bugs and beasts. Not for the faint-hearted!

Thurs 31 July

Children’s event – Pirates Ahoy

Enjoy fun on the high seas, with treasure chest chases, boat battles and piratical puppet shows – Yo, ho, ho and a bottle of rum!

AUGUST

Tues 5 August

Children’s event – Gladiator School

Meet a fearsome Roman legionary, listen to ancient legends and learn the secrets of stage fighting at our junior Gladiator School!

Thurs 7 August

Children’s event – Spy School

Find out about wartime espionage, handle secret gadgets and learn deadly tricks – ideal for all Spy Kids and junior James Bonds!

Tues 12 August

Children’s event – Knight School

Learn the skills of a knight: make your own armour, try hobbyhorse jousting, longbow archery and even take part in a castle-building contest!

Thurs 14 August

Children’s event – Hunting Hawks and Creepy Crawlies!

See magnificent birds of prey, horrible creepy crawlies and even a chance to handle a real tarantula spider!

Tues 19 August

Children’s event – Medieval Mayhem

Medieval fun with have-a-go crossbows, children’s try-on armour and the Battle of Bosworth recreated by an army of vegetables!

Thurs 21 August

Children’s event – Commando Kids!

A chance to join the army, 1940’s style, with a junior commando assault course! Also see – and climb inside – a real armoured vehicle!

Tues 26 August

Did you know?

Thunder birds are go!

Artillery pieces before about 1700 were often classified by names. A rare type of very big gun was known as a basilisk, a more common long powerful gun was known as a culverin while smaller versions were named after birds of prey such saker and falcon.
